The Creature of North Hampton Woods, part 2
Note: This is the second part to the story. If you haven’t read the first part yet, it can be found here.
Work on the house was coming along great. Bill had really fixed the old place up and it was starting to resemble more of a home rather than run down cabin in the woods. The walls had fresh paint, the place had new carpet, and all the broken windows were fixed. Bill was settled in and was starting to become comfortable.
But, that didn’t last long.
One night, while Bill was watching TV, he saw the creature again out of the corner of his eye. He didn’t dare turn his head this time. He didn’t want to scare it away. He wanted to find out what it was. Bill had a curious nature and decided he was going to let this situation play out.
From the side, he could vaguely make out the shape of the being standing in the doorway to the living room. It’s shadow was cast along the floor. The smell started to seep into the room.
Bill’s heart was beating a million miles per minute. He could feel the icy cold stare of the creature. Beads of sweat started to form on his forehead. He didn’t know what to do.
After what felt like an eternity, Bill decided he was going to confront the creature again. Bill slowly, but surely turned his head towards the doorway. The creature, upon seeing Bill divert his gaze, scurried off into the next room leaving behind that familiar scent of rotting chicken.
Bill stood up and went running into the next room, only to see the creature bolt out of the front door and off into the woods. The creature ran on two legs, like a man. This was definitely no animal.
Confusion set in. Bill’s mind was racing. He just saw something that he could not explain. He couldn’t deny it this time. He saw the creature running away in the moonlight and got a good look at it. A 4 foot tall troll.
Doing the only thing he could think of, Bill got on the phone and called his friend Tim to come over. Tim was there within the hour, and that’s when Bill told Tim the entire story of the creature.
Tim thought Bill was pulling a prank on him, but he quickly realized his friend was being dead serious. It was now pitch black out, but they couldn’t wait until morning to go search for this creature. They decided they had to investigate right away. They grabbed some shotguns and flashlights and started to hike into the woods.
After a few hours, they found nothing. They returned the house, and tried to go to bed, but couldn’t sleep. Tim left the next morning, leaving Bill alone in the house once more.
Bill only stayed in the house another few weeks after that. Sometimes, on dark, quiet nights, he would catch a glimpse of the creature peering in at him through windows. On other nights, he could smell the creature but never saw it. Bill couldn’t take it anymore. He always felt uneasy, as if something was watching him. He decided to pack up and leave the house. He sold it a few months later.
So, is there a troll roaming in North Hampton Woods? Bill swears this story is completely true, and I’ve never heard him tell a lie in his life. If there are any brave souls out there, maybe you can try to spot this elusive creature.
As promised in the previous post, I will now reveal the location of North Hampton Woods. The woods are located in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio off of Northampton Road. Here’s a map.
If you do go exploring out there, be sure to ask permission first. Some of the property is privately owned and I’m sure people won’t want you snooping around on their property uninvited. So, ask permission first, go at night, be safe, and I hope you find what you’re looking for… 🙂

What rings true about this story to me is strangely enough the description of the creature itself. What you are describing, down to the smell is very similar to a brownie – as in the faerie-like creature, not the dessert (as great as those are).
We think of faeries today as small winged creatures with cheery dispositions, but in their original forms, I assure you, faeries of where mischievous at best, terrifying at worst. To the people that recorded these legends, faeries were to them as bigfoot, the mothman and the jersey devil are to us.
Was what your friend saw really a brownie? Is this story really true? There’s no way for me to know. But your description matches some very ancient stories about similar creatures.

I think Will has the right idea. They are called faries as mentioned, and are also konwn as Elementals…. this one was obviously the one that has to do with nature. From the sounds of it, this cabin was built on ground where said fairy pretty much owns. It’s been said that if you cross the path of a fairy, you’re pretty much guaranteed a very, very bad time.

Read this story originally a few months ago and have done some research since then. Brownies apparently like to come in to someone’s home and find treats, that are secretly left for them. In return for the treat they help build, clean or do whatever chores they see are to be done. Apparently you can eventually befriend them. One ledgend or myth, however you wish to think it, states that a woman in Ireland or Scottland had befriended a brownie and they remained so for years. She became pregnant and when she went in to labor the brownie went off to fetch a doctor to help her. I believe the woman ended up dying and the brownie was never seen or heard from, because they leave evidance of their presence. I’ll search for the link that I found that story from and post it. I found it rather interesting.
